Description:

APARSEN: Alliance for Permanent Access to the Records of Science Network (http://www.aparsen.eu) is a Network of Excellence that brings together an extremely diverse set of practitioner organisations and researchers in order to bring coherence, cohesion and continuity to research into barriers to the long-term accessibility and usability of digital information and data, exploiting our diversity by building a long-lived Virtual Centre of Digital Preservation Excellence.

Participants from Greece are Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) (Institute of Computer Science -ICS) and University of Patras (Library & Information Center).

In the last decade there has been a remarkable production of digital content in Greece. Now days we can consider a critical mass of content that eventually will drive us to examine and undertake digital preservation activities in a national and organizational level in the near future.

Within this framework in this workshop we will look to gather representatives from the major Greek digital content providers as well as from the research community (libraries, museums, archives, governmental and public organizations, research institutes, companies etc) aiming to:

  • Analyze basic terms of digital preservation and protection
  • Present current technologies, services and standards in digital preservation
  • Present APARSEN project
  • Discuss a series of issues on
    • Needs and requirements of the content providers
    • Challenges and opportunities for digital preservation projects in at the organizational, national and European level
    • Potential collaborations in a national and international level
    • Adoption of proper and viable digital preservation business models

Organisers :

Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH), Institute of Computer Science (ICS), Information Systems Laboratory, http://www.ics.forth.gr/isl

University of Patras, Library & Information Center, http://www.lis.upatras.gr/

Results:

For the first time Greek digital content providers, researchers and government sector representatives gathered together under the perspective of digital preservation. Through the discussion an interest came up from various parts, mainly cultural organizations and libraries, for more information on

  • Tools, services and procedures to support design and implementation of DP within their organizations
  • Future DP services of APARSEN VCoE and how their organizations could participate and further more how they could get help on their future DP activities.

We have taken useful feedback on how they would like to see an organization such as APARSEN to operate: open and free membership, DP consultancy services upon request, guidelines on technical aspects as well as on business models. Funding DP activities as well as lack of DP experts and knowhow were reported as the major barriers for adopting/implementing DP activities.

We estimate that an initial core network of organizations with interests in DP could be «formed» in order to advance DP issues in Greece giving useful feedback to various APARSEN tasks.
