Stream 2: technical research

Questions that can be asked

These questions (or a suitable subset) can be put to ICT architects of large-scale solutions at archives, data centres, etc., and/or data holders, repository managers and the like, at APARSEN partner organisations—people who are not directly involved in APARSEN but will probably have something valuable to contribute.

  • (General) What kind of data do you store and process?
  • (General) What kind of preservation actions are you applying? (data normalisation, metadata, etc.)

  • (WP21) The working definition of a preservation service is an operation related to digital preservation that can be shared, rather than being specific to a particular organisation; furthermore a service is distinguished from a tool, which is software that runs locally, by potentially being run by a third party. Although we think of services as mostly being automated, we should not neglect human services such as audit and certification of repositories. Does this definition make sense to you?
  • (WP21) Do you see scope for (or maybe already use) external services in your preservation activities? ("external" = beyond one particular repository; services could be run within an organisation if they are offered to multiple repositories)
  • (WP21) Where would you see the greatest benefits from these services?
  • (WP21) How would the use of such services affect your costing of preservation activities?
  • (WP21) Here are some requirements for a data preservation infrastructure components from the PARSE.Insight roadmap. Can you imagine (parts of) these being offered as services? How do they relate to your situation?
    • Ability to create and maintain adequate Representation Information
    • Ability to share information about the availability of hardware and software and their replacements/substitutes
    • Ability to bring together evidence from diverse sources about the authenticity of a digital object
    • Ability to deal with Digital Rights correctly in a changing and evolving environment
    • An ID resolver which is really persistent
    • Brokering of organisations to hold data and the ability to package together the information needed to transfer information between organisations ready for long term preservation
    • Certification process so that one can have confidence about whom to trust to preserve data holdings over the long term
  • (WP21) Here is an additional list of services that APARSEN has assembled. Do these relate to your situation? Here refer to the list on the WP21 wiki page
  • (WP21) Are there any potential services missing from the above lists?
  • (WP21) Is there anything else you would like to add about preservation services?

  • (WP23) Can you describe briefly what your ICT infrastructure look like with regard to storage and processing?
  • (WP23) Add another question or two ...

  • (WP27) A. What type of data is the organization preserving and for how long

  • (WP27) B. How often are preserved objects searched accessed

  • (WP27) C. Availability:
    a. Are objects expected to be accessed from anywhere or only specific locations?
    b. Are there requirements on the response time?

  • (WP27) D. For each of the parameters below what is your scalability needs now, in five years, at a longer term
Parameter Requirement now In five years Longer term
    Total capability (in TB)
number of digital objects and their sizes
    variety of data types
number of versions for each object
connections between objects (are objects groups in a way that the are often accessed together)
amount of metadata (ratio between the data size and metadata size)
