Responses to web designer

The wireframe design no longer displays "Operated by" (APA) and "Powered by" (APARSEN). These little labels beneath the logos top left as seen in previous designs should remain.

  • To my understanding, the big round main area icons (Community, Training, etc.) are present on the start page only, they will not appear on subsequent pages. Hence, removing the main menu top right would only be an option for the start page.
    • Correct/FINE/VPZ: OK/GJ: OK

Keep menu structure and display as is.

  • I am happy to see that the structuring by main area was taken up. However, now we have redundancy: The main area roll-overs each include news, downloads and events. These content types appear a second time on the front page as “APA/APARSEN Daily” and “Approaching Digital Preservation Events” but without restriction to the single main area. We must not have this redundancy, it only causes confusion. I would say either we consequently go for the main areas structuring the start page (and removing “APA/APARSEN Daily” and “Approaching Digital Preservation Events”) or we skip the big main area icon rollovers on the start page.
    • Please advise how you wish for us to proceed as this was changed as per last request. The news, downloads , events sections under each icon will only be relevant to each rollover, whereas main area will include everything?
      • I THINK WE NEED THE ROLLOVERS ON THE FIRST PAGE. SO WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE APA/ARSEN DAILY AND DP EVENTS – IF I HAVE UNDERSTOOD THIS.
      • VPZ: I also agree that we need the rollovers, I would remove in the rollovers “Events” but keep “Downloads”. For “News” I am not completely sure: will we have main area related news? This of course causes a lot more work, as several places on the homepage have to be kept up to date, so maybe delete it here and leave it on the front page. Brings us to the question what should appear in the rollover? I would say some introductory text, what is our community and as a second thing “Downloads”. Do we need a third section in the rollovers?
      • GJ: Keep the rollovers slim, for standards they are rather packed already. News will be maintained independent of web pages. News will get assigned categories, i.e. main areas. When rendering the start page, the WCMS will filter for top 6 “Community” news and put them in. I agree with Ruben, remove “APA/APRSEN Daily” and “DP Events” sections (outside the rollovers). I suspect that Downloads will not change frequently; also, main areas like “Community” are unlikely to actually have Downloads. So I tend to keep Downloads out of the rollovers and have a global Downloads section in the main area.

It was decided not to structure content on the start page along the main areas "Community", "Training", "Knowledge base", "Consultancy". Events, Downloads and News will be displayed globally/ not restricted to the single APARSEN main area as blocks on the start page, not in the rollovers. There will be no rollovers for the APARSEN main areas. Further change of main area structure on start page see below.

  • To me, there is too much graphical fuzz in the top area of the page. I would like to see the big main area icon row below the introduction text “Digital encoding has become”
    • Please confirm how you wish to proceed? I do not think this section would have the same impact if it was moved further down the page, also it may not then be seen on the screen view without scrolling down?
      • OK LEAVE AT TOP FOR NOW, VPZ: yes, let’s leave it like it is.

The horizontal line of the four APARSEN main areas icons plus "APA/APARSEN member" icons should be deleted. Instead, each of the four APARSEN main areas (currently represented with their icon and rollover) should become a single static block on the start page, e.g. as four columns side-by-side with their icon inside. Such start page section should be placed below the introduction text. The big "APA/APARSEN member" icon to be removed completely.

APA-Homepage-wireframe:

  • General Comment: can we make the used space a bit wider, I find it too narrow.
    • I will send you a screenshot of how the page will look when being viewed shortly .
      • NOT SURE I HAVE SEEN THIS,
      • VPZ: ok. looking forward to it. One additional thing: couldn’t we put the menu of the main areas which is currently on top, on the left or right side of the main body of the site, like on the continuation pages, I find this would help to make orientation on the website easier.
      • GJ: Keep the main(!) menu where it is, top right in a grid layout. 960px used page width are standard. Keep it. Instead, font size could be varied.

  • Can we maybe cancel the menu items “community”, “training”, “consultancy”, “knowledgebase”, “About APA” and “About APARSEN” as the areas can be clicked on on the items below, and about APA and APARSEN could pop up if you click on the logos
    • Not really, as stated above the big round main area icons (community, training etc) will only be visible on the homepage, therefore you would require this from other pages, although you could remove the APA and APARSEN if required, please confirm?
      • PLEASE LEAVE FOR NOW – FOR CONSISTENCY WITH OTHER PAGES OTHERWISE IT IS VERY EASY TO GET LOST ON THE SITE;
      • VPZ: see my comment right here above
      • GJ: Keep as-is

Keep menu structure and display as is.

  • I would follow Kirnn’s recommendation to say: Virtual Centre of Excellence in Digital Preservation; why is VCoE written in small letters? This is not consistent with the rest of the site? There should be made a decision for all headings if nouns are written in capital letters or not. This is not yet consistent either.
    • We can strip out the heading ‘Welcome to the APA & APARSEN website for excellence in Digital Preservation’ and just have in the banner heading ‘Welcome to the Virtual Centre of Excellence in Digital Preservation’ – Please confirm this is how you wish us to proceed?
      • CAN’T WE LEAVE AS IS AND CAPITALISE WHERE NEEDED, WHY STRIP OUT ‘Welcome to APA/APRSEN website…’?
      • VPZ: I could also live with the solution just to have: “Welcome to the Virtual Centre of Excellence in DP” I find it a bit strange that we two “Welcomes”. Maybe we can put some kind of header like: “APA&APARSEN providing Excellence in DP” above the introductory text: “Digital encoding……”
      • GJ: Have no differentiated opinion.

Please substitute in the highlight the text line "Welcome to the..." with text line "Working towards the..."

  • I would include a title in the general introduction text, maybe “About Digital Preservation”
    • Ok this is fine.
      • YES GOOD,
      • VPZ: see directly here above.
      • GJ: I object. This is yet the third(!) heading before actually some text content comes. Currently we already have the highlight heading “Welcome to the... virtual centre of excellence”, then the page title “Welcome to the APA & APARSEN website for excellence in digital preservation” followed by “About Digital Preservation”. There is too little beef on top. But go ahead, in case we change our mind later a simple text heading inside a text block can be removed any time easily.

Remove main static headline "Welcome to the APA/APARSEN website for excellence in Digital Preservation" completely. Set new headline "Excellence in Digital Preservation" above the text block that starts "Digital encoding has become"

  • In contrary to Gerald I found it useful to have downloads right on the first site, same to have direct links to latest/all deliverables, similar as you have made it on the current website in this yellow box.
    • Please advise how you wish for us to proceed?
      • MIGHT BE TOO MESSY TO HAVE ALL THESE ON THE FRONT PAGE – IF I HAVE UNDERSTOOD CORRECTLY. CHILD PAGES ARE SHOWN ON THE RHS OF EACH MENU ITEM WHEN YOU ARE IN THAT AREA OF THE WEBSITE, I BELIEVE.
      • VPZ: ok. but maybe we could have already on the front page a link to all the APARSEN deliverables called “APARSEN results” or similar, because currently our results are “hidden” behind “About APARSEN”. I would like to make them a bit more visible.
      • GJ: Alright, no “Downloads” in rollovers, instead “Downloads” in main area.

Downloads will not be within the single APARSEN main areas page blocks. There should be one Download page block on the start page. Replace the current block "New presentations" with the Downloads block from previous designs. The previous Downloads block design was fine. Please put Downloads block in a right column to the right of the "APA/APARSEN Daily" block. To achieve that, the "APA/APARSEN Daily" block should shrink in width and grow in height.

  • I do not find the calendar very useful on the first site, I would stick to a list of events
    • Please advise how you wish us to proceed, this was changed due to Gerald initial feedback?
      • LIST IS EASIER BUT I DON’T MIND HAVING CALENDAR - USERS CAN SEARCH BY MONTH,
      • VPZ: I leave it tot the majority in this group, I would prefer a list. /
      • GJ: Let’s have a global calendar table on a dedicated web page. On the start page, upcoming event lists only inside rollovers.

Please remove Calendar - and replace with an event list like in previous design, not a grid layout as in wireframe design. Please note that the previous design did not use actual event names and dates, so it could be inappropriate in layout. To be named 'Forthcoming Events' in an list as in previous design and taking up perhaps half the page width. To the right of this a half page width perhaps APA/APARSEN members logos - rolling area

  • I would also put the Twitter stream on the homepage
    • Ok if required, this could go in the footer – please advise?
      • TWITTER STREAM ON RHS MENU IF POSSIBLE WOULD BE BETTER NOT IN FOOTER – IF SPACE – GIVEN CHANGES ABOVE;
      • VPZ: I wouldn’t also put it in the footer; this is something dynamic and activities on Twitter will increase, so this could bring some life to the website, then maybe put it instead of top stories as this box is redundant with daily news, and how to fill all these top stories with content?
      • GJ: Twitter stream on start page in main area OK. Not in the footer.

• We now lost the log-in completely?  No, it is still there, it is under each of the relevant sections, i.e.community, tranining etc. I THINK LOGIN SHOULD BE ON FRONT PAGE – SMALL VERSION WHICH WE AGREED - NOT UNDER RELEVANT SECTION, VPZ: Agree with Kirnn. / GJ: Login must be available on front page. Latest design alright with me.

Responsive design is included within this project.

Kind Regards

Melissa
