APARSEN Panel @ iPRES2013

Date: September 4, 2013

Time: 11:30 - 13:00 (90 minutes)

Title: Building blocks for a common vision on digital preservation. From common vision to common services.

Motivation: The main part of the panel consists of the discussion of three exemplary services in the field of Digital Preservation (DP). After 2014 FP7 projects, such as APARSEN will end. The aim of APARSEN is to establish a “Virtual Centre of Excellence” (VCoE) on DP. This VCoE will be based on a common vision on digital preservation currently under construction. It is not clear weather in the next framework program, Horizon2020, research on DP can be conducted in way that is done in the current FP7 program. This makes it even more eminent to thoroughly think on a way to establish a sustainable infrastructure to disseminate and enrich knowledge and services developed in the current running FP7 projects. It is the aim of this panel to contribute to this process by presenting and discussing a number of exemplary services in the field of DP. A number of statements are given based on the services that act as the basis for discussion. In first instance the project manager of the FP7 project APARSEN (David Giaretta) and a representative of the European Commission (Carlos Morais Pires) will reflect on the statements. But also the audience will get the opportunity to contribute to the discussion.

In the panel three exemplary services are introduced. These are:

1. Audit & Certification of Trusted Digital Repositories,

2. Infrastructure Services

3. Training.

Before we will pay attention to the three exemplary DP services we will start with a presentation that provides some context information by presenting the main results of the APARSEN project. The approach of APARSEN is described by summing up the “defragmenting” research done within the 4 topics. The “Common Vision” and establishment of the VCoE are under construction. A closer description is given. Common Vision: “The common vision brings together the various aspects of digital preservation investigated within the project into a coherent overall understanding of digital preservation which underpins and informs activities, advice and training in digital preservation, as well as delineating areas which require further research.” Virtual Centre of Excellence: “A Virtual Centre of Excellence is a fairly new organizational concept. Its aim is to bring the capabilities, knowledge and expertise together from diverse teams across geographical and organization boundaries to create something exemplary and distinguishable within its domain.”
