Servicetypename Long-term archiving service
Description Digital collections need to be preserved securely over the long term. To do so, various archiving solutions are available on the market or developed in house. However, these solutions are expensive and require an in-house infrastructure to run on. Many smaller organisations dealing with data preservation do not have such an infrastructure, money and/or expertise to setup and maintain an archiving solution. As a result, many collections aren't preserved under the right conditions, leading to data loss and unwanted risks (see also PARSE.insight survey results).

A long-term archiving service could solve this problem by offering online storage and tools for taking care of digital collections the right way.

Scenario You are an organisation that does not have the capacity to invest in and host your own large scale infrastructure systems & servers, but you do have a commercial need to ensure the long term accessibility of your digital assets. What you are looking for is a preservation service where there is no need for the up-front purchase of expensive storage and processing systems or specialist system administration skills. You're not sure how much capacity you need to provision the system for, so instead your looking for a system where you only pay for the storage you consume, and that you can increase your computer resources as and when required. You don't want to be involved in having to patch and manage the platform, and you want to be sure it is maintained within a fully backed-up, highly-secure data centre in a territory of your choice. You also want to buy in to a system that can demonstrate the benefits from years of Digital Preservation expertise in managing the risk of file format obsolescence.
An institution aims to preserve its resources but they don't have resources to upgrade their institutiona eposiotry toward a Trusted and Long ter preservation oriented repository. Since their content have a strong social and historical value, they sign an agreement with the National Library for depositing contents in the Digital Stacks. Once the content are deposited they receive an NBN that will be included in the content metadata.

The Digital Stacks service is a public service of trusted digital repositories for the long term preservation of deposited digital resources through a scalable infrastructure (that can expand following the requirements and the available economic resources) and flexible (that can be used for the preservation of every type of digital resources). The Digital Stacks infrastructure is suitable not only for the library domain, but also for all the areas where long term access to digital resources must be ensured.

The Digital Stacks guarantees for the deposited resources: viability: the quality of being readable from media. The bit sequences of each file are intact and readable.

renderability: a digital object can be used in the way it was intended. A certain hardware and a certain software are capable of managing the stored digital resources, for example, by visualizing a document in PDF format.

authenticity: it is intended as documentation of identity and integrity. It should be possible to verify the creator of the object and establish that the object has not been changed in an inadvertent or unauthorized way usability: availability for designated communities. The resource has metadata enough to ensure its retrieval and use in the long term. The Digital Stacks is fully integrated with the Italian persistent identifier service NBN:IT.

Nextsteps SDB (& Preservica) is a fully supported and maintained product that has an active development roadmap, whereby SDB User Group members get the opportunity to vote on and influence the what new features and capabilities are introduced into the system over time with each six monthly release of the software.

For Digital Stacks: managing the DRM in a dynamic way.

Finaldestination Development of an actively used preservation service that incorporates best practices in its processes and functions.

Since Digital Stacks is supportetd the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage (MIBAC) it aims to become one of the most important preservation service for Universities, Publishers and Cultural Heritage institutions in Italy.
