Scenario Digital Preservation Repositories need to be able to share their information with other system and end users. One way to do this is to provide an OAI-PMH interface that allows the repository to allow external systems to query its metadata database and allow specific fields of metadata to be accessed in the form of XML Schemas that are supported by that repository. The protocol also allows for Metadata Harvesting, allowing repositories to update themselves about objects based on data held by external systems that also offer the OAI-PMH exchange protocol, allowing 2-way synchronisation configurations to be implemented.

This is not a stand alone service, but a service that may be offered by more mature Digital Preservation Repositories.

Implementations Installations of Tessella's SDB include an OAI-PMH service that can be configured for use by each customer to fit in with their needs for access and metadata sharing.
Nextsteps Not sure - you either implement / use this service or you do not. Is it specific to 'Preservation Services'? I'm not sure, this is mainly and 'Access' function, although tied in with exchange of file format risk (representation) information may result in it being considered an integral part of providing a preservation service? Perhaps an area for further discussion?
