Authenticity Management in Long Term Digital Preservation-a conceptual framework Authenticity is fundamental to digital preservation, but it needs to be managed carefully. After this module the participant should have a broad understanding of the types of RepInfo that he/she may need for their repository's holdings together with some familiarity with the tools that may be of use. Discoverability Show some examples of the different ways in which data is found from Google to GIS based selection to more complex selection of scientific data. Hand over of digital holdings Show some scenarios of hand over of holdings, pointing out the problems that have arisen e.g. some semantics locked into proprietary systems. Participant should be able to examine where issues might arise in their own systems. The unit should show that a repository does not need to be funded forever - examples of archives such as scientific project archives should be given, together with the steps taken in hand over. Identifying Designated Communities Choosing and specifying the Designated Community for a collection of digital objects is a critical part of preservation. This module should critically discuss a number of examples and the implication of those various options. The module should give a number of examples of designated community definitions. An example should be given of the possibility/implications of using different definitions of the DC for the same digital objects The participant should understand why the Designated Community must be specified by a repository and the implications of the choice. Increasing value Examples of ways in which value has been increased, e.g. by combining with other data from other disciplines. Participants should be in a position to think of how their holdings could be increased in value. Ingest Number of real-world examples and also to the outline of the PAIS standard. Options for trade-offs between costs, risks and capabilities Discussion of examples of trade-offs such as cost of adding specialised RepInfo vs increase in potential value. It will probably be difficult to quantify these but at least likelihood of increase/decrease in the amounts should be possible. Outline of OAIS concepts A brief overview of the Functional and Information models and their relationship. Also the responsibilities of a repositories will be discussed. Transform to another format The challenges that must be addressed here range from the the circumstances under which transformation may be a sensible option to the choice of what to transform into to the practical issues of performing the transformation. After this unit the participant should be able to discuss the pros and cons of a variety of transformation strategies. The module should contain at least one example of a rendered object e.g. an image and also a piece of scientific data. The limitations of the "Significant Properties" compared to "Transformational Information Properties" should be pointed out. DG MP4 recording TRN036
